When Amy Schneider’s fellow junior high classmates voted her "Most Likely To Be An Environmentalist," they recognized her desire to be a part of the solution to the world’s environmental problems. Her experience studying sustainable design and pollution prevention this summer at the U.S. Department of Energy’s Pacific National Laboratory in Richland, Wash., allowed her to do just that.
"The atmosphere was great," Schneider says. "It was really neat to be around scientists and engineers. It was really motivating and inspiring."
The UMR team, composed of Schneider, architectural engineering major Corry Hailey, and Dr. Stuart Baur, UMR assistant professor of architectural engineering, was one of few college and university teams across the nation chosen by the U.S. Department of Energy to participate in this 10-week research program, known as FaST (Faculty and Student Teams).
Schneider, a native of St. Louis, is pursuing a civil engineering degree with an emphasis on environmental engineering. “It gives me a sense of fulfillment in terms of my career," Schneider says. "I decided to do engineering to make myself more able to make improvement."
Outside of the classroom, Schneider serves as secretary of UMR’s Water Environment Federation and Spelunkers Club and works with environmental health and safety and environmental management systems offices.
Amy’s advice for young people interested in helping the environment? "There’s always the same thing: reduce, reuse, recycle. If you can, try not to be wasteful."

Hee hee! I think I have that memory book somewhere!
Amy, I have no idea how to get ahold of you, but if for some reason you read this, email me! Or get ahold of me through my parents, you know they haven't moved at all. My email is Jennahlik at hotmail dot com. Otherwise, if you look for me, my name may or may not be hyphenated to Nahlik-DeLuca. I unfortunately agreed to it in a moment of weakness, but now want no part of it.
Anyway, not sure if you'll ever see this. Maybe I'll try other forms of stalking.
Miss you!
Jen(ny)
