Blogging from Bahamas: Tara's take

The infamous English group

Tara Gosnell continues her dispatches from the Bahama island of San Salvador, where she and her fellow Englsh students (pictured above) are studying this week.

When we woke it was raining. Woe to those who left laundry on the line overnight. Regardless of the rain, we all slathered on sunscreen. We had breakfast (pancakes and bacon), and then climbed on the trucks to head to Sue Point. Dr. Maglia was driving, so Neil asked to switch trucks. Second gear didn't work well, so we heard a lot of grinding. Scott Perdue lost his water bottle on the way, and we had to pull the convoy over so he could retrieve it. He also later poured rotten coconut juice in his hair.
Sue Point was beautiful but harsh. The sky was still overcast and promised more rain, and the dark blues and greys were mirrored in the water. The tide was fast and hard, and the rough and sharp beach rock braced against the crashing waves. It sounded like thunder. Frothing pools of water were standing in the rock valleys, and some slowly drained back to sea. White caps of waves could be seen offshore. I wish I had learned some of the bio and geo stuff, because as much as I enjoyed the morning, I'm sure the other groups were more excited about all the things they saw. I collected a few sponges and saw some hermit crabs and a sea urchin. We tried snorkeling, but a lot of people just ended up bobbing in the waves, which was fun in itself. Some of us got sand in places we never expected, and it stuck like cement.

After Sue Point, we stopped briefly in Cockburn (co-burn) Town, and headed to the spot where Christopher Columbus landed on the island. There we ate a picnic lunch and wandered around the beach. Neil found a folding chair in the ocean. Apparently it was standing up and collapsing with the tide. Later, we went to the airport to pick up our newest arrival.

The rain that was promised earlier came while we were riding back in the trucks. What was really a gentle rain became 50 mph pellets of torture in the hands of Prof. Wronkiewicz, who had taken over racing driving for Dr. Maglia. We were soaked, cool, and hurting from the force of the rain. Wronkiewicz was speeding along and suddenly stopped as we drove past the gate to the research center, and we all piled on top of each other on impact.

The English group took a break to shower and nap, and then met up to discuss our potential school visit to teach poetry. We're also contemplating sitting around Cockburn Town or a local bar to play cards (a nightly enjoyment) and soak in the culture.

At the 7:00 evening meeting, Dr. Swenson had everybody write similes and metaphors; most examples were playful jabs at Dr. Wronk's driving and the painful rainfall. She then had them take five minutes to write a poem. The English group's assignment tonight is also to write a poem, and to think on a lesson plan for the school trip.

It's still raining, and is expected to continue to do so all week.

Tara: The small little things are usually the things I remember :-P. Love the picture of Neil walking with the folding chair out of the water. I see you're wearing your hat in the picture, how's that working out?!? :-D. Card games, how fun. I know in my camps I was counselors for we played card games every night. Oh, and I whooped Chris in Bowling when I bowled a 176 and he got a 121. Mike: so, from a couple different posts it sounds like snorkling there is a lot different from Hawaii! :-D. All: Take Care!
Tara, I love reading these 'blogs', your posts are very informative and descriptive. It sounds like everyone is having a good time! Be careful! BTW, your kitties are fine, they miss you though. GREAT photos! More, more, more! :)
