Blogging from Bahamas: The crab invasion

You've read about her experiences with hiking, snorkeling and riding in the truck in the rain. Read more from Tara:

20 May

I slept until 9:30 today. Since today was our free morning, I intended on hiking to see the sunrise at a little after 6:00, eating breakfast, and then going to church to see a little culture. However, that didn't happen.

I had opened the door and was walking into the bathroom when I heard this ticking sound and a somewhat large crab scuttled in front of me. I yelped, and then realized it wasn't a huge spider and was, therefore, cool, and called for Mike to get his camera. It ran into the corner near a large hole, so I backed out and stood with my back against the wall, lest it see me.

Mike got his camera ready and I told him where the crab was. He lowered the camera and told me there was no crab. I peeked around the corner. No crab. We retreated around the corner again, and then peeked back around. Mike found the crab by our shower, near the door. It turned into Ninja Crab and started scaling the wall next to the shower. I finally decided the crab needed to leave so I could actually use the bathroom without Mike shooting pictures with me in there, and grabbed a folder to usher the creature out the door. In the middle of shooing away the crab I heard the familiar ticking sound. I told Mike, "There's another one in here; I hear it." We got the crab to run out the door, Mike followed it and I hesitantly lifted the lid to the toilet. Not there. Partially hidden under a bag next to the wall was another, tinier crab. It must have been the equivalent of a young child, because it was clearly operating under the principle that since its eyes were hidden and it couldn't see me, I was equally unable to see it.

As soon as I moved the bag, what I imagine to be a look of utter shock crossed its face at its being discovered. I grabbed two plastic cups and placed them on either side of the crab and moved them in to capture it. The crab felt one way, then the other, hoping for a quick escape. Trapped. I scooped up the little crab and gave him to Mike, who proceeded to take pictures of it and let it outside.

We spent some time at Sand Dollar Beach this afternoon. I didn't go in the water, but stayed on the sand watching everyone else find dozens of sand dollars. I heard today was the last day snorkel to allow some time for our clothes to dry before we leave.

Apparently my big 4-inch-wide brim hat isn't distinctive enough--I keep getting mistaken for Leslie, one of the geology students. One person told me it was because we both have red hair, but Katie also has red hair. I suspect it's because Leslie and I both have the same swimming shoes, but I can't confirm that.

While at Sand Dollar Beach, a storm began to roll in. We returned in sprinkles and then it started to pour. We had a guest in our room to greet us: the little crab.

Around 6:10, Katie, Mike, and I were standing outside the library. This bolt of lightning hit in the west and we commented on how cool it looked. Seconds later there was this sound like someone firing a huge cannon right beside us. The subsequent thunder roll lasted over 40 seconds. My left ear hurt all night after the explosive crack of thunder.

The night dive was canceled due to the weather.

Tonight was movie night. The movie? Cast Away.

When we got back to our room, a bark anole scooted under our door.

Fantastic!! Sorry you ended up missing the sunset, but I LOVED the crab story...and the bark anole was so cute! I couldn't imagine thunder being that loud, definitely sounds like through the whole trip rain was a common factor :-D. I love your stories, I'm so glad it sounds like you and Mike had such a fantastic trip!!!
